NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania – May 29, 2025 – In a landmark achievement for Sierra Leonean football, the national women’s team, the Sierra Queens, have advanced to the finals of the 2025 WAFU A Women’s Championship after a thrilling 1-0 win over Mali.
The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when star midfielder Salamatu Kamara broke the deadlock with a stunning late strike, sending Sierra Leone into their first-ever WAFU A final. Her goal capped off a night of intense action in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, and sparked celebrations both on the pitch and back home.
Kamara, who also captains the team, described the moment as “a dream come true,” praising her teammates for their belief and determination. “We’ve worked so hard for this. It’s more than just a victory — it’s history,” she said after the match.
The Queens’ path to the final was defined by strong teamwork and defensive resilience. Goalkeeper Hannah Juana once again delivered a standout performance, making crucial saves throughout the match and earning her third Woman of the Match award in the tournament.
