Freetown, Sierra Leone – The popular Sierra Leonean entertainer known as The Mighty Blacker has passed away after battling health issues for an extended period.
His remains are currently in Crab Town, Western Urban District, awaiting funeral arrangements.
Blacker’s guardian, Madam Lahai, confirmed his passing, and tributes have begun pouring in from fans and well-wishers. Blogging platform Hawanatu Konneh Network shared the news, expressing deep sorrow:
“It’s with heavy hearts that we officially announce the death of The Mighty Blacker. He sadly passed away alone in an unfinished building, with no one by his side as he took his last breath. Rest in peace, Blacker. We will forever miss you.”
Blacker had been battling health issues for an extended period. A video that surfaced several months ago highlighted his deteriorating condition, showing him lying on a gutter slab and appealing for financial assistance to cover his medical treatment. Despite support from Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad, he succumbed to his illness this week.
Throughout his life, Blacker was a prominent figure in Freetown, known for his candid social commentary and advocacy. In January 2023, he urged Sierra Leonean youth to pursue self-employment and vocational skills, emphasizing the importance of hard work and creativity.
His outspoken nature sometimes led to challenges. In November 2021, he reported being assaulted by political thugs following a protest against the government.
Additionally, in early 2022, he was arrested for allegedly insulting President Julius Maada Bio but was later granted bail.
Blacker’s life highlighted the struggles of mental health and freedom of speech in Sierra Leone. Advocates have called for better protection and support for individuals facing similar challenges.
His passing marks the end of an era for a man who, despite his struggles, remained a beloved figure in Sierra Leone.
