In a shocking turn of events, the Minister of Works and Public Assets, Dennis Sandy, has been accused of attempting to sexually assault his 18-year-old stepdaughter.
The allegations, if proven true, would be a damning indictment of the government’s stance on combating sexual violence a cause it has repeatedly championed.
According to the young woman, she has endured years of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, who previously served as Minister of Lands, Country Planning, and the Environment, and is currently the Minister of Works under the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) administration.
The victim described her stepfather’s behavior as predatory, adding that each time she tried to speak out, Sandy resorted to threats of violence.
Reports indicate that Sandy allegedly threatened to kill members of his own family, including his wife, in an attempt to silence the victim and conceal his actions. However, despite his threats, the truth has come to light, and the allegations are now the subject of intense public scrutiny.
The case raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to protecting women and children from sexual violence. Sierra Leonean authorities have been vocal about their dedication to women’s empowerment and the prevention of gender-based violence. Yet, these claims, involving a sitting minister, cast a dark shadow over the administration’s efforts.
Public outrage has been swift, with civil society groups, activists, and concerned citizens calling for the immediate suspension of the Minister pending a full investigation.
“This is an absolute disgrace to the nation,” one activist said. “To have a high-ranking government official accused of such heinous acts is both shocking and unacceptable.”
The government has yet to issue an official statement, but pressure is mounting for swift action. Activists are calling on President Julius Maada Bio to demonstrate his commitment to justice by suspending Sandy from his duties until the investigation is complete.
If found guilty, Dennis Sandy could face severe legal consequences, not only for the alleged crime but also for betraying the public trust.
