Freetown, Sierra Leone – March 3, 2026 – Unverified reports have surfaced claiming that Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio is stranded in Dubai, unable to return home amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The rumors, originating from social media and opposition politicians like Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, suggest Bio traveled secretly to the UAE but is now stuck, with speculation ranging from personal matters to disrupted travel due to regional conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the US.
President Bio, who has served as Sierra Leone’s leader since 2018 and was re-elected in 2023 amid economic challenges and political debates, is no stranger to international diplomacy. As the current chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), he has been actively involved in regional mediation efforts, including outreach to junta leaders in the Sahel region. Just months ago, in November 2025, Bio addressed the United Nations Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, emphasizing the need for global peace and stability. His role in ECOWAS has also seen him convene summits on West African security issues, such as the recent extraordinary meeting on Guinea-Bissau.
Critics however highlight his frequent foreign trips amid domestic economic challenges, fueling unease over the alleged absence.
Prominent voices have demanded clarity. Journalist and former minister, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden urged the government to address the speculation, stating, “Some say he went for medical care to Lebanon secretly and he is NOT in Dubai. Whatever the reason or location, Government needs to tell us. This silence is bad for our stability.” She emphasized her lack of insider knowledge.
Former Attorney General Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara echoed concerns on X, posting: “Reports that President Bio is in a difficult situation abroad are deeply troubling. Our thoughts are with his safety, but this uncertainty is unacceptable. Govt must clarify his location and condition. The public deserves transparency. Like Scooby-Doo, where are you Mr President?” The post drew mixed reactions, from humor to worry.
The government has issued no official response, leaving social media abuzz with a blend of concern and skepticism. As rumors persist, observers note potential impacts on Sierra Leone’s stability and regional role.
The timing of these rumors is particularly notable given ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, including escalations between Iran, Israel, and involvement from the United States. While Dubai itself remains relatively stable as a global hub for business and diplomacy, the broader regional instability, marked by airstrikes, proxy conflicts, and diplomatic standoffs, has disrupted travel and heightened security measures across the area.
