In a significant policy shift, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that, beginning in 2025, students will be permitted to retake only the subjects they did not pass, rather than re-sitting entire examinations.
This initiative is designed to alleviate academic pressure and enhance success rates throughout the region.
Traditionally, students who failed a single subject were required to retake all their exams.
The new “Resit Public Exams” policy aims to provide a more attainable pathway for students to obtain their qualifications, while upholding the integrity of the examination process.
A WAEC representative stated, “This policy is designed to support students and encourage persistence. We want to remove barriers to success and motivate young people to complete their education.”
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from students and parents, who view it as a much-needed reform to support individual growth and improve educational outcomes.
By addressing specific challenges, WAEC aims to build a stronger foundation for the region’s education system and provide young learners with a renewed sense of hope.
