Freetown, May 4, 2025 — The University of Sierra Leone, through its Academic & Career Advisory, Counseling and Student Complaints Services (ACACSC), has issued an urgent notice to all students following a significant rise in confirmed monkeypox (Mpox) cases across the country.
As of May 1, 2025, the Ministry of Health has reported 1,140 confirmed cases nationwide, with 837 currently active and 88 new cases recorded. The majority of infections have been traced to the Western Urban and Western Rural areas, which are home to many students and their families.
In response, the university is urging all students to strictly observe the following preventive measures:
* Maintain good hygiene by frequently washing hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer.
* Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms such as rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
* Do not share personal items, including towels, clothing, and bedding.
* Wear face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
* Report any symptoms immediately to the university clinic or nearest health centre, or call the national emergency line 117.
* Follow all health advisories from the National Public Health Authority, government sources, and the university without delay.
University officials emphasize that the health and safety of students and staff remain a top priority. Students are encouraged to cooperate fully to help maintain a safe and conducive learning environment.
