The University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH) has officially been granted permanent university status by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) of Sierra Leone.
This prestigious accreditation, effective from September 1, 2024, follows a successful re-accreditation process, further solidifying UNIMTECH’s reputation for providing quality education and academic excellence.
In a public statement, UNIMTECH celebrated this milestone as a testament to the hard work and dedication of both past and present academic and administrative staff.
“This significant achievement is the result of the collective efforts of our dedicated team,” the statement read.
Special recognition was given to key leaders within the institution.
“We would like to particularly acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rosaline Uyanga, our Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Patrick Taylor, and our late Registrar, Dr. Aly Turay,” the statement continued. Their leadership has been instrumental in guiding UNIMTECH to this momentous occasion.
The institution also expressed heartfelt gratitude to its Chancellor, Professor Paul Kamara, and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Paula Kamara.
“Their visionary leadership has guided us to this milestone. What began in 1991 as a modest computer training centre has now been realized with UNIMTECH being recognized as a permanent university,” the statement noted.
UNIMTECH, which became autonomous from Njala University in 2021, now has the authority to establish new undergraduate and postgraduate programs, subject to TEC’s accreditation process. The university emphasized its commitment to continuing its growth and making quality tertiary education accessible across Sierra Leone.
“We are committed to continuing our growth and making quality tertiary education available to disadvantaged populations at an affordable cost,” the statement affirmed, reflecting the university’s motto, “For Country and For Humanity.”
The university’s campuses, strategically located across Sierra Leone, include facilities in Kissy Dockyard (Freetown, Western Area), Bo (Southern Region), Kambia (Northwestern Region), Kono (Eastern Region), and Lunsar (Northwestern Region). All buildings and properties on these campuses are owned by UNIMTECH.
Expressing gratitude to its supporters, UNIMTECH acknowledged the role of Njala University in shaping the institution. “We wish to express our profound gratitude to Njala University for their invaluable tutelage during our affiliation with them,” the statement read, highlighting the importance of this partnership in the university’s journey.
The accreditation, which will be subject to annual reviews, covers a diverse range of Bachelor’s Degrees in Public Administration, Social Sciences, Technology, and Applied Sciences, along with Higher National Diplomas and Diplomas in specialized fields. This will enable UNIMTECH to continue its mission of delivering top-tier education and fostering innovation and research that contribute to the development of Sierra Leone and beyond.
UNIMTECH expressed its deep appreciation to the Tertiary Education Commission, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, and all education authorities in Sierra Leone for their confidence in the institution.
The university concluded by thanking its students, faculty, staff, and partners, stating, “Together, we will continue to build on this foundation, driving academic excellence and community engagement as we move forward.”
