On Friday, Guinean authorities announced the arrest of two women of Sierra Leonean nationality on charges of possessing cocaine. The suspects were apprehended in Kourémalé, a border town between Guinea and Mali, with a total of 10 packets of the drug in their possession.
The women were subsequently transferred to Siguiri, where they are currently detained. The suspects, including one identified as Aminata Mansaray, were presented to the press alongside security and judicial officials.
Mansaray reportedly told Guinean media that their journey had started in Sierra Leone and was intended to end in Ghana, passing through Guinea and Mali.
Ibrahima Camara, a Guinean prosecutor overseeing the case, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
This incident highlights the ongoing drug crisis in West Africa. The source of this crisis remains a topic of debate, though some countries in the region, including Sierra Leone, believe it to be originating from within their borders.
Sierra Leone has recently declared a national emergency in April due to a surge in drug and substance abuse.
