Freetown, Sierra Leone – Authorities at the Sierra Leone Ports & Harbor Authority have intercepted a large-scale shipment of illicit drugs, seizing 461 cartons of Tramadol concealed inside four 20-foot containers at Water Quay.
The consignment, suspected to be part of a Guinean-linked trafficking ring, was stopped before it could leave the port and was immediately turned over to the Sierra Leone Police and the elite Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU).
A driver who arrived to collect the containers was arrested on the spot, in what officials describe as a significant step toward dismantling the broader smuggling network.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Brima Kanneh, Head of Operations at Water Quay, confirmed the interception and issued a strong warning to traffickers.
“This is only the beginning,” Kanneh stated. “Investigations are ongoing and will dig deeper into the syndicate’s network and its cross-border connections.”
The seizure highlights growing efforts by Sierra Leonean authorities to combat transnational drug trafficking through the country’s ports.
No further arrests have been announced, but sources indicate that the probe is actively pursuing additional leads.
