The Rt. Hon. Speaker of the Parliament of Sierra Leone, Segepoh Solomon Thomas has commended Members of Parliament for their bi-partisan approach during the pre-legislative hearing on the Constitutional Amendment Act 2025, relating to the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.
The hearing, which aimed to amend the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, saw MPs from both sides of the aisle engaged in constructive and respectful dialogue.
Speaker Thomas praised the MPs for their commitment to the democratic process, emphasizing that their collaborative approach was instrumental in achieving a successful outcome. He encouraged them to maintain this patriotic spirit as the Bill moves forward, reminding them to adhere to parliamentary procedures outlined both in the 1991 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.
“Acknowledging the gravity of constitutional matters, I urge you to handle these discussions with calmness and patience,” Speaker Thomas said. “Please exercise patience, present your points calmly, and let’s find common ground where we disagree.”
He emphasized that disagreements are inevitable, but stressed the importance of maintaining decorum and respect, even in the face of controversy. “Let’s behave as Honourable Members and find common grounds,” he urged.
Speaker Thomas expressed satisfaction with the hearing’s outcome and called on MPs to sustain this spirit during the Bill’s surgical consideration before passage into law. He also invited the public to contribute their views, ensuring their perspectives are captured in the amendment’s process.
“Position Papers can be submitted to the Clerk of Parliament for consideration before the Bill’s enactment,” he said, reiterating the importance of public engagements.
Reiterating his commitment to transparency and accountability, Speaker Thomas assured that the Sixth Parliament, under his leadership, is an Honourable House dedicated to serving the people. The House will adhere to the law, ensuring a thorough and inclusive amendment process.
The Constitutional Amendment Act 2025 aims to review and update the 1991 Constitution, addressing various aspects of governance for national development.
The pre-legislative hearing marked a crucial step in this process, providing a platform for stakeholders to engage and contribute to the amendment’s process.
