Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has issued a fresh call for the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education to speed up the payment of outstanding school fees subsidies, cautioning that continued delays could create yet another backlog as the academic term draws to a close.
In a formal letter to the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, the Union reminded the government of key agreements reached during the recent teachers’ strike, which included clearing the 2024/2025 fee subsidy arrears and paying the first-term subsidies for the 2025/2026 school year.
Despite assurances from both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, the SLTU noted that first-term subsidies remain unpaid.
With schools expected to close within the next two weeks for the Christmas holiday, the Union warns that failure to act now may result in renewed financial strain on schools.
The SLTU is urging the Ministry to urgently fulfil its commitments to avoid further disruptions and ensure effective school operations nationwide.
