Freetown, Sierra Leone – February 2, 2026 – The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has kicked off the year by distributing the initial portion of its enhanced annual subventions to the nation’s five Regional Football Associations, marking a significant boost for grassroots football development.
On Friday, January 30, the SLFA disbursed US$25,000 to each regional association, an amount equivalent to NLe 567,500 in local currency. This payment represents 50 percent of the approved annual allocation for each region, providing timely financial support to fuel local initiatives.
The move comes on the heels of a recent decision by the Executive Committee, led by President Babadi Kamara, to raise the annual regional funding from US$15,000 to US$50,000.
SLFA officials stated that the increase is designed to alleviate financial pressures on the regions and bolster the foundation of football across the country.
“The SLFA remains committed to empowering the regions as a cornerstone of football’s growth in Sierra Leone,” the association noted in its press release. “This disbursement underscores our dedication to nurturing grassroots talent and ensuring sustainable development nationwide.”
The remaining balance of the annual subvention will be released later in the year, adhering to the SLFA’s established financial and administrative guidelines. This structured approach aims to promote accountability and effective use of funds.
As Sierra Leone’s governing body for football, the SLFA continues to prioritize regional empowerment, recognizing the vital role these associations play in talent identification, youth programs, and community engagement.
