Freetown, January 16, 2025 – The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) have called for a swift and thorough police investigation into the gruesome killing of journalist Samuel Brima Mattia.
Mattia, a former reporter for VOPAD Radio 96.5 FM and an active member of SWASAL, was reportedly found dead under brutal circumstances in Waterloo on January 16.
His killing has sent shockwaves through the media community, with both organizations condemning the attack as a direct affront to press freedom.
SLAJ expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability.
“We urge the Sierra Leone Police to ensure a prompt and comprehensive investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice,” SLAJ said in a statement signed by its National Secretary-General, Alhaji Manika Kamara.
SWASAL echoed the call for justice, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in Sierra Leone.
“This heinous act highlights the vulnerabilities of media practitioners who work tirelessly to inform the public,” the association noted.
Both SLAJ and SWASAL extended condolences to Mattia’s family and colleagues while urging the public to cooperate with authorities in uncovering the truth. SWASAL also launched the hashtag #JusticeForMattia to raise awareness and garner public support.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Waterloo is currently handling the case, with SLAJ confirming its ongoing engagement with law enforcement. Both organizations vowed to continue advocating for journalist safety across the nation.
