Moyamba, Sierra Leone – In a significant move toward reshaping Sierra Leone’s administrative landscape, the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Tamba Lamin, has announced Cabinet’s approval for the creation of two new districts and the elevation of additional townships to city status.
Speaking during the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s ongoing Civic Day Series in Moyamba, Minister Lamin revealed that Bandajuma District will be established from parts of Bo and Pujehun Districts, forming a new administrative zone in the Southern Province. In the east, a second district, Kpangoma, will be carved from sections of Kenema and Kailahun Districts, further redefining regional boundaries in the Eastern Province.
The announcement also included plans to upgrade Lungi Township—home to Sierra Leone’s international airport—to full city status, signaling a boost in urban development.
These changes mark the most notable administrative overhaul since the decentralization initiative under former President Ernest Bai Koroma, which saw the creation of Falaba and Karene Districts from Koinadugu and Bombali respectively, and the establishment of the North Western Province.
If fully implemented, the latest reforms will raise the total number of districts in Sierra Leone from 16 to 18.
The proposals are now set to undergo legislative and administrative review before taking effect.
