Lungi, Sierra Leone — In response to a growing number of Mpox cases in the country, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), through the National Civil Aviation Facilitation Committee (NCAFC), has announced immediate public health safety measures at the Freetown International Airport (FNA).
According to the SLCAA, these actions are critical in bolstering prevention and protecting the health of passengers and staff.
“As part of our commitment to public safety, thermal imaging cameras have been installed at the main terminal entrance to detect elevated body temperatures,” SLCAA stated.
“Anyone found with a high temperature will be referred to our airport medical unit for further evaluation, following protocols from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.”
To promote hygiene, alcohol-based hand sanitizers have also been placed throughout the terminal in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
In a significant move to protect airport workers, the SLCAA confirmed that 300 essential staff have already received the Mpox vaccine.
“We are working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure that all airport personnel are covered,” the Authority added.
Additionally, the public is being urged to maintain safe distancing while at the airport.
“We are calling on all passengers and visitors to cooperate fully with these measures,” the SLCAA stated. “Collective vigilance is essential to maintaining a safe travel environment.”
The new measures come as part of national efforts to curb the spread of Mpox and safeguard international travel through Sierra Leone.
