Freetown, February 17, 2025 – The Government of Sierra Leone has commenced negotiations with Karpowership to ensure the continued supply of electricity to the capital, Freetown.
The talks were led by Energy Sector Lead, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, who met with representatives from the Turkish company to discuss the future of the power arrangement.
Speaking at the meeting, Karpowership’s representative, Emre Durmusoglu, expressed optimism about the negotiations, emphasizing the company’s commitment to helping Sierra Leone address its energy challenges. The discussions are expected to determine the terms under which the power ship will continue generating electricity for domestic, commercial, and industrial use.
The negotiations come at a critical time, as the government pushes forward with its energy reform agenda, linking power sector improvements to President Julius Maada Bio’s broader “Feed Salone” initiative. Ensuring stable electricity is seen as a cornerstone of national development, impacting industries, businesses, and households.
Dr. Yumkella’s engagement with Karpowership follows a series of high-level meetings, including a visit from an African Development Bank (AfDB) supervision team and a steering committee session reviewing energy sector priorities.
The AfDB has been a key partner in supporting Sierra Leone’s power sector, aligning its investments with the government’s goal of energy sovereignty.
As negotiations with Karpowership continue, the government remains focused on long-term energy security, including plans for renewable energy expansion and improved grid infrastructure.
