Sierra Leone and Liberia have taken a significant step toward improving cross-border trade and cooperation following ECOWAS’ official handover of the construction site for a Twin Border Post (TBP) between Jendema and Bo Waterside.
The ceremony, held on 22 November 2025 at the Jendema crossing point in Sierra Leone, brought together senior officials from both countries, led by the Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission. The event also included the laying of a foundation stone, signalling the formal start of the long-awaited project.
The new Twin Border Post, fully funded by the ECOWAS Commission, is expected to be completed within 24 months. Once operational, it will streamline customs processes, cut down transit delays, and make movement easier for traders and travellers between Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Officials from both nations noted that the facility will improve economic activity in the Mano River region, especially for communities that rely heavily on cross-border trade. It is also expected to strengthen cooperation between Freetown and Monrovia by creating a modern, shared border management system.
In Sierra Leone, the Jendema site covers 81,050 square metres (20.26 acres), while the Bo Waterside site in Liberia spans 73,250 square metres (18.10 acres). Both locations currently consist of lightly vegetated land earmarked for development.
Beyond enhancing bilateral ties, the project will improve connectivity along the broader Praia–Dakar–Abidjan corridor, a critical route for West African commerce.
Officials say the initiative reflects a renewed commitment from Sierra Leone, Liberia, and ECOWAS to invest in infrastructure that supports stability, trade, and long-term regional integration.
