The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has announced the implementation of stringent new measures at the Freetown International Airport, aimed at combating child trafficking.
In a recent statement, the SLCAA emphasized that, effective immediately, only children who are traveling will be permitted to access the airport from the main gate.
Furthermore, children traveling with individuals who are not their biological parents will now be required to present authorization from the relevant agencies, allowing them to travel with the child in question.
“The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, in line with our oversight responsibilities and in consideration of the rising threat of child trafficking, has found it necessary to introduce these measures,” the statement read.
The Authority also cited efforts to reduce congestion and enhance the overall passenger experience at the airport as key factors in the decision.
The SLCAA has directed the management of the Freetown International Airport to ensure that these new security measures are communicated effectively to all relevant stakeholders.
“We count on your usual cooperation and support in enhancing aviation security in Sierra Leone,” the statement concluded.
These new measures represent a significant step by Sierra Leonean authorities in their ongoing efforts to address the serious issue of child trafficking, while also improving operational efficiency at the nation’s main international gateway.
