Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leonean government has recalled its ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, after Guinean authorities impounded an embassy vehicle in Conakry on December 31, 2024.
This was confirmed following a meeting with Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Guinea’s President, Col. Mamadi Doumbouya.
The vehicle was found carrying seven suitcases containing substances suspected to be cocaine, along with approximately $2,000 in cash.
Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba announced the immediate recall of Ambassador Bangura to Freetown for a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.
He emphasized that while the ambassador was not present in the vehicle at the time of the seizure, and there is no evidence linking him directly to the alleged drug trafficking, a thorough investigation is imperative.
The occupants of the vehicle, including the driver—a local staff member of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Guinea—and another individual, were arrested by Guinean authorities and are currently under investigation.
The Sierra Leonean government is collaborating closely with Guinean officials to ascertain the facts and ensure accountability.
Minister Kabba reiterated the government’s firm stance against illicit activities and assured that anyone found guilty of violating Sierra Leonean and international drug trafficking laws will face the full force of the law.
He also urged the public to rely on official communications for accurate information and to avoid speculation that could harm international relations. citeturn0search1
