In a recent address at the Special Presidential DEPAC Meeting, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio reaffirmed his commitment to not extend his presidency beyond the current terms as outlined by the nation’s constitution.
President Bio clarified that he would neither seek a seven-year term extension nor pursue a third term in office.
This statement came amid the ongoing review of Sierra Leone’s 1991 constitution, a process that has been in progress for nearly two decades.
During his speech, President Bio emphasized the importance of the Constitutional Review Process, describing it as a pivotal moment for the country aimed at reinforcing democratic governance and addressing the evolving needs of its citizens.
“The objective is not just to amend a document but to embark on a transformative journey that will secure the democratic future of Sierra Leone,” he stated.
Bio also highlighted the collaborative nature of the review, pointing to its roots in the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission following the country’s civil war.
By committing to this comprehensive review, he reiterated his dedication to enhancing the constitution in ways that reflect the current and future aspirations of Sierra Leoneans.
With these remarks, President Bio continues to outline his vision for a legally strengthened democratic framework for Sierra Leone, prioritizing inclusivity and responsiveness to societal changes as the nation moves forward.
