In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that rocked Morocco, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has joined a chorus of world leaders in expressing heartfelt condolences and support for the victims.
President Bio took to social media to convey his message of solidarity, stating, “On behalf of the Government and good people of the Republic of Sierra Leone, I extend our deepest sympathies to the Government and citizens of the Kingdom of Morocco for the tragic loss of lives and injuries caused by the Earthquake that struck central Morocco on Friday night. Our thoughts and prayers are with Morocco as they deal with the devastating effects of the #earthquake.”
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.2, struck south of Marrakesh on Friday night, marking the most significant seismic event in Morocco in over 120 years. The catastrophe has resulted in a tragic toll, with at least 1,037 lives lost and over 1,200 individuals injured, including 721 in critical condition. Shocking footage shared on social media depicts a massive cloud of dust rising in the southern part of the city.
The global community has rallied in support, with leaders from around the world offering tributes and prayers through their social media platforms. The earthquake’s impact was felt far beyond Morocco, with tremors reaching as far as Portugal.
Witnesses on the ground have described heart-wrenching scenes of families searching desperately for loved ones amid the rubble, accompanied by “unbearable screaming and crying.”
Tourists in Marrakech, including British nationals, recounted their harrowing experiences, seeking shelter under tables and sleeping outside their hotels as the tremors shook the city.
Much of the damage occurred outside urban centers, emphasizing the vulnerability of rural buildings to such powerful earthquakes.
The United States Geological Survey has cautioned that the death toll is likely to rise significantly as the extent of the destruction becomes clearer.
Videos shared by residents show buildings reduced to rubble, and parts of the iconic red walls surrounding Marrakesh’s old city have also sustained damage.
As Morocco grapples with this unprecedented disaster, the international community stands united in extending its support and sympathy to those affected by this tragic earthquake.
