Octopus Energy, in collaboration with actor Idris Elba, has announced its inaugural renewable energy project in Africa—a wind farm on Sherbro Island, Sierra Leone, equipped with solar panels and battery storage.
The project was officially unveiled at COP29, the World Climate Conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan, where global stakeholders gather to address climate policies.
Octopus Energy’s plans outline the construction of up to five wind turbines near Bonthe, Sherbro Island’s main town and largest energy consumer. Alongside solar power and storage solutions, the initiative aims to provide clean energy for roughly 2,000 homes while creating local jobs, boosting the economy, and supporting schools and healthcare facilities. Currently, only 5 percent of Sierra Leone’s rural population has access to electricity.
Idris Elba expressed pride in the project, describing it as “a foundation for sustainable growth and energy independence in Sierra Leone.” He emphasized that the upcoming wind farm will symbolize a cleaner, greener future for the region.
Octopus Energy Generation CEO, Zoisa North-Bond, noted that this project would provide critical data on wind and energy usage, facilitating further renewable investments throughout Sierra Leone. The company aims to help Sierra Leone achieve its ambitious target of generating 85 percent renewable electricity by 2030.
The project will also work with local universities to train young people in renewable energy skills, addressing Sierra Leone’s need for skilled labor and supporting sustainable employment across industries.
How do you feel about the impact of this project on Sierra Leone’s renewable energy goals and job market?
