FREETOWN – In a bold move to reinforce tax compliance, the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has temporarily sealed off the offices of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) and the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA).
The enforcement operation took place on Wednesday at the Electricity Building in Freetown, which houses EDSA, and at SLRSA’s headquarters.
The NRA’s action is part of a broader crackdown aimed at ensuring public institutions meet their tax obligations. According to the authority, EDSA is currently indebted to the state to the tune of NLe 328,396,305.03, while SLRSA owes NLe 15,336,611.76 in unpaid taxes.
Officials from the NRA, citing legal authority, evacuated employees from both buildings and sealed the premises.
The authority clarified that the enforcement is not intended to punish the institutions but to uphold transparency and accountability in public finance management.
“This is a necessary step to enforce compliance and encourage constructive engagement towards resolving outstanding tax liabilities,” an NRA representative stated.
The closures will remain in effect until the institutions settle their dues or reach a resolution with the tax authority.
