Freetown, August 29, 2023 – In a gesture of collaboration and continued engagement, the management team of Mercy Ships visited the office of Mr. Yankuba Asia Bio, General Manager of Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA), on Tuesday.
This follow-up visit by Mercy Ships aims to strengthen the partnership between the organization and SLPA, which is hosting them in Sierra Leone. Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome and the supportive environment provided by SLPA, the Mercy Ships management reiterated their commitment to collaboration.
During the meeting, discussions centered around various operational aspects. Mercy Ships outlined their plans, which encompass regular drilling exercises, diving operations, and work boat patrols. These activities are geared towards inspecting and maintaining their vessel during its stay.
In response, Mr. Yankuba Asia Bio assured Mercy Ships that SLPA is open to accommodating their operational needs, provided that the organization notifies SLPA 48 hours in advance, except in cases of emergencies.
To facilitate smooth operations, SLPA has designated a space within the SLPA clinic building to serve as a patient assembly and holding center. This area will be used for verifying and preparing patients before they access the ship. Additionally, the CFE gate has been opened to enable easy transportation of patients to and from the vessel.
Recognizing the value of knowledge exchange, Mr. Yankuba Asia Bio suggested that Mercy Ships contribute to the training and knowledge transfer of essential SLPA staff, including medical personnel, marine officers, and safety officers. This initiative, he emphasized, would leave a lasting legacy and greatly benefit both parties.
Affirming SLPA’s commitment to supporting Mercy Ships’ activities in providing hope and healing to the people of Sierra Leone, Mr. Yankuba Asia Bio instructed the Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO) to establish a dedicated communication channel for addressing concerns and coordinating efforts between SLPA and Mercy Ships.
