A heartwarming story of resilience, charity, and hope has unfolded in Sierra Leone, where a young girl, Tallah Sawaneh, underwent life-saving surgery, changing her life forever.
Tallah’s journey began in 2021 when, at just four months old, she fell gravely ill with an undiagnosed condition. Her parents, facing severe financial challenges, brought her to the Makeni Government Hospital, where she was admitted for two months without any improvement. The family, torn between addressing their daughter’s health and meeting their basic needs, found themselves in a seemingly impossible situation.
In April 2021, a chance encounter with Karifa Thoronka, Executive Director of the Residential Elderly Care Foundation, proved to be a turning point.
Thoronka, who was visiting the hospital to support elderly patients, discovered the critically ill Tallah and immediately stepped in to help. He convinced the attending doctor to refer her to Connaught Hospital in Freetown.
The journey to Freetown was made possible by the generosity of Edward Y. Bangura, who offered his vehicle free of charge to transport the family.
In Freetown, the intervention of Umaru Napoleon Koroma Esq was instrumental in securing the surgery. He made critical arrangements and provided the family with NLe 500 to support them post-surgery.
To ensure the surgery’s success, both Thoronka and Tallah’s father, Kallie Sawaneh, donated blood for the procedure. Thanks to the collective efforts of these individuals, Tallah’s surgery was successful, giving her a second chance at life.
Fast forward to December 2024, Tallah is thriving. During a recent visit to her village, it was heartening to see her healthy and attending school. Her father, Kallie Sawaneh, expressed his deep gratitude, saying, “We would have lost our daughter because we had no money to even travel to Freetown, let alone pay for the surgery. We are grateful to Umaru Napoleon Koroma Esq and all those who helped us save her.”
Tallah’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of compassion and community support in changing lives.
