The Sierra Leonean government has confirmed the impending deportation of 11 of its nationals from the United States, scheduled for April.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd AIG Morie Lengor, announced during the Ministry of Information weekly press conference on February 25, 2025, that these individuals are being deported due to insufficient documentation, not criminal activity.
He added that the Ministry is prepared to facilitate their reintegration upon arrival.
This development follows a formal notification from the U.S. Ambassador, as part of broader immigration enforcement measures. The government emphasizes its commitment to ensuring a smooth and dignified return for its citizens.
This development comes amidst broader U.S. immigration enforcement measures affecting nationals from various countries.
In response to circulating reports and intelligence regarding possible deportations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sierra Leone, convened a strategic meeting with key stakeholders to formulate a coordinated response. Discussions focused on enhancing migration management and strengthening coordination to ensure the safe and dignified return of Sierra Leonean citizens.
IOM has expressed its commitment to supporting the government’s efforts by providing reintegration opportunities at both individual and community levels.
The government is actively preparing for the arrival of the deportees and will take appropriate action once their identities are confirmed.
This situation highlights the ongoing global discourse on immigration policies and the challenges faced by individuals lacking proper documentation. The Sierra Leonean government remains committed to addressing these challenges through collaborative efforts and comprehensive support systems for returning citizens.
