The Deputy Registrar, Brima Bah, has announced the suspension of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election originally scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024.
This decision comes in light of ongoing investigations into a series of disruptive and dangerous activities on campus.
“Unsavory acts by groups of students, including spilling used engine oil (‘burn oil’) at the entrances of offices and lecture halls and an attempted arson at the Administration Building, have forced us to postpone the election,” stated Bah.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 24, 2024, included assaults on security personnel and the dissemination of threatening messages.
The escalating tension and attacks have raised serious security concerns, disrupting the peace and tranquility on campus.
“The learning environment has already been disturbed in the first week of the second semester, disadvantaging the majority of students eager to commence lectures,” Bah added.
Students are advised to continue with their academic and other activities as the administration concludes its investigation. “We will release a statement on the next steps once the investigation is complete,” assured Bah.
The administration has warned that those intent on disturbing campus peace and threatening national security will face the full force of the law.
“The attempted arsonists have been handed over to the police for investigation. Others caught in subversive activities will receive similar treatment,” Bah emphasized.
The Deputy Registrar called for the understanding and cooperation of all students committed to their academic pursuits.
