The United States Embassy in Sierra Leone has confirmed that K-1 fiancé visas remain unaffected by the recent visa restrictions imposed by the U.S. government.
This clarification brings relief to many Sierra Leonean nationals who feared their plans might be disrupted following Washington’s new measures announced on June 4, 2025.
The restrictions, which came into effect on June 9, apply to several visa categories, including B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism), F (student), M (vocational), and J (exchange) visas.
However, according to an official communication from the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, the K-1 visa category is not included in these limitations. “K-1 fiancé visas continue to be accepted and processed as normal,” the embassy stated.
The K-1 visa allows a foreign fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen to travel to the United States with the purpose of getting married within 90 days of arrival. After marriage, the individual can apply for adjustment of status to become a lawful permanent resident.
This announcement offers clarity for couples who were uncertain about how the restrictions might affect their immigration plans.
“Couples who are in the process of applying, or those intending to apply, can proceed with confidence,” the embassy noted.
The U.S. Embassy further encouraged applicants to stay informed through official channels and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website for the latest updates and detailed guidance on visa procedures.
The embassy’s clarification comes amid growing concern among Sierra Leoneans over the scope of the U.S. government’s recent travel policy and its potential impact on personal and family plans.
