Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Ministry of Defence and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (MOD/RSLAF) have announced the compulsory retirement and discharge of several officers, following approval by the Defence Council during its meeting on Monday, November 18, 2024.
In a press release issued today by the Directorate of Defence Public Relations, the Ministry confirmed that the decision affected officers across various ranks, including Major Generals and Lieutenants. The officers were categorized under three specific discharge types:
- Administrative Discharge: A total of 53 officers, ranging from Major General to Lieutenant, were retired under administrative measures.
- Compulsory Discharge for Absence Without Leave (AWOL): Eleven officers, from Major to Lieutenant, were discharged due to prolonged absence.
- Compulsory Discharge for Misconduct: Six officers, from Lieutenant Colonel to Lieutenant, were dismissed for misconduct.
“These decisions are in accordance with Section 169 (1) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991 and Army Orders No. 1 of 1965, paragraphs 26 and 27 (a & b),” the release stated.
As a gesture of goodwill, the Defence Council approved a lump sum payment equivalent to one year’s salary for the 53 officers retired under the Administrative Discharge category. They will also receive their gratuities and other entitlements.
Col. Issa Bangura of the Ministry of Defence emphasized that the move was part of efforts to uphold discipline and accountability within the armed forces.
“These measures are vital to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of RSLAF,” he said.
The decision takes immediate effect, with the names of the affected officers set to be published in the National Gazette for public reference.
