In a significant step towards enhancing the partnership between China and Sierra Leone in the realm of sports development, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, H.E. Wang Qing, along with his delegation, conducted a cordial visit to the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, at her office in Bishop House, Siaka Stevens Stadium.
The encounter commenced with an insightful introduction from the Permanent Secretary, Morrison B. Gboyo, who underscored the longstanding cooperation between the two nations in advancing sports.
The Ambassador and his delegation were warmly welcomed to the Ministry of Sports, where discussions centered on fostering collaboration.
Ambassador Wang Qing expressed his delight at meeting the newly appointed Sports Minister and extended his congratulations on her appointment.
He emphasized the enduring friendship between China and Sierra Leone, symbolized by the Siaka Stevens Stadium.
The Ambassador conveyed China’s substantial contributions to sports development in Sierra Leone, including support for various associations, training programs, scholarships, and recent collaborations on university games and training initiatives in China.
Notably, Ambassador Wang Qing highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens Stadium as a testament to China’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone. He assured the Minister of continuous support and collaboration for the advancement of sports within the country.
In her response, Minister Augusta James-Teima expressed gratitude for the Ambassador’s visit, highlighting China’s proactive stance in promoting sports and fostering bilateral relations.
She commended China’s past assistance during critical periods such as the Ebola outbreak and the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as its contributions to training and scholarships.
Minister James-Teima’s rich experience in sports management and leadership, including her previous participation in a program in China, positions her well for her role.
She pledged her dedication to working alongside her team to serve President H.E. Julius Maada Blessing Bio and the people of Sierra Leone, underscoring the importance of cooperation between the nations.
As a gesture of goodwill, Ambassador Wang Qing presented a special gift to Minister Augusta James-Teima. The occasion concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Haroun Korjie, the Director of Sports. The meeting was attended by senior staff of the Ministry, highlighting the collaborative spirit in furthering sports development between China and Sierra Leone.
