Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a pointed plea for balanced governance, Hon. Chernor Ramadan Maju Bah, widely recognized as Chericoco, has voiced alarm over recent actions targeting the All People’s Congress (APC), Sierra Leone’s main opposition party.
The ex-parliamentarian and legal expert released a statement on Friday titled “A Call for Fairness, Restraint, and Respect for Democratic Space,” highlighting the Political Parties Regulation Commission’s (PPRC) decision to suspend the APC, levy substantial penalties against it, and the subsequent detention of party Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya at the Pademba Road prison.
Chericoco noted that the APC had promptly paid the imposed fines out of deference to legal authorities.
“The APC complied with the fines because we respect the law and the institutions established to uphold it,” he stated. However, he questioned the escalation, saying it sparked doubts about equity and the safeguarding of the nation’s political landscape.
Emphasizing his longstanding advocacy for justice, Chericoco cautioned against the potential weaponization of legal systems.
“As a lawyer and former lawmaker, I have always believed in the rule of law and the importance of strong, independent institutions,” he explained. “But the law must never be perceived or used as a tool for political intimidation. Institutions must not appear to weaken legitimate opposition voices.”
He argued that the country’s democratic advancement hinges on impartiality and adherence to foundational rights. While respecting judicial autonomy, Chericoco called on government bodies to prioritize objectivity and ethical conduct.
“Good governance requires institutions that safeguard democratic participation, not restrict it,” he added.
Turning to the APC’s base, both domestically and internationally, Chericoco advocated for composure and solidarity.
“To APC members and supporters across Sierra Leone and the diaspora, I call for calm, discipline, and unity. Let us remain focused, principled, and committed to peace,” he urged.
In closing, he reiterated the party’s dedication to core ideals: “The APC will continue to stand firm in defense of democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as we work toward a better future for all Sierra Leoneans.”
This development comes amid ongoing tensions in Sierra Leone’s political arena, where opposition figures have increasingly raised concerns about institutional bias.
