Freetown – June 12, 2025 — The Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL) has issued an official clarification following public discussions around a figure cited in its recent audit report concerning the government’s efforts to promote food self-sufficiency and combat climate change through agricultural reform.
The audit had initially indicated that $800 million was spent on the development of the National Agricultural Transformation Strategy (2019–2023). However, the ASSL has now clarified that the figure actually refers to the projected cost of implementing the strategy, as outlined in documents from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), rather than actual government expenditure during the audited period.
“This clarification follows updated information and continued engagement with relevant stakeholders,” the statement explained.
In its release, the ASSL emphasized the importance of timely and constructive feedback from ministries, departments, agencies, and local councils during the audit process.
According to the Service, such responses are essential to ensure that audit conclusions remain fair, accurate, and balanced.
Martin Sandy, Senior Information, Education and Communication Officer at ASSL, reiterated the agency’s dedication to professionalism and transparency.
He noted that the Audit Service remains committed to working with all stakeholders to promote accountability and the effective management of public resources.
