Freetown, Sierra Leone – March 18, 2026 – The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has expressed concern over what it describes as limited progress in the country’s post-election reconciliation process, alleging that key commitments under the Agreement for National Unity (ANU) and recommendations from the Tripartite Committee remain largely unimplemented.
Speaking at a press conference in Freetown, APC representatives, including Lansana Dumbuya, said the current situation reflects a growing political impasse that could affect national stability ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The party maintained that reforms agreed upon following the disputed June 2023 presidential and parliamentary elections are progressing slowly.
The Agreement for National Unity was signed in 2023 between the APC and the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to ease tensions and strengthen collaboration after disagreements over election outcomes. Among its provisions was the creation of a Tripartite Committee involving representatives from government, the opposition, and development partners to review electoral systems and governance institutions.
According to the APC, the committee produced approximately 80 recommendations in June 2024 aimed at improving electoral transparency and institutional effectiveness.
The party cited a March 12, 2026 update from the Tripartite Steering Committee Secretariat indicating that only a small portion of the recommendations have been fully addressed.
APC officials warned that unresolved concerns surrounding electoral transparency and institutional reforms could affect public confidence in the democratic process. They described the ANU as an important framework intended to promote stability, cooperation, and national cohesion.
Government representatives, however, have indicated that progress is being made. Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, who chairs the Tripartite Steering Committee, has previously stated that implementation of agreed measures remains ongoing as part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic governance.
The APC called for renewed dialogue and faster implementation of the agreed reforms, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trust and preventing further political tensions ahead of the next electoral cycle.
ApcOpposition leaders said the briefing was intended to inform the public on developments related to national reconciliation efforts.
