Freetown, Sierra Leone – 23 June 2026 – The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education has officially announced a revised schedule for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), confirming that the exams will now commence on Monday, 6th July 2026.
In a press release issued today, the Ministry, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), stated that the adjustment was made following careful review of logistical and administrative requirements to guarantee a smooth, fair, and well-organized nationwide examination process.
“The Ministry of Education… wishes to inform parents, guardians, candidates, and the general public that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will now commence on Monday, 6th July,” the statement read.
The Ministry acknowledged the anxiety the period of uncertainty may have caused candidates and their families. It reassured stakeholders that every measure is being taken to ensure the examinations proceed without disruption.
“This adjustment has been made after careful consideration of logistical and administrative requirements necessary to ensure a smooth, fair and well-organized examination process nationwide,” the release added.
“The Ministry recognizes the anxiety this period of uncertainty may have caused candidates and their families, and wishes to assure the public that every measure is being taken to guarantee that this year’s BECE proceeds without disruption.”
The Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and well-coordinated process, noting that the full timetable and additional updates will be communicated through official channels in the coming days.
