Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Government of Sierra Leone has officially declared Wednesday, 27th May 2026, a nationwide public holiday in observance of the Feast of Eid-ul-Adha.
In a formal public notice issued from State House, authorities informed the general public that the sacred occasion will be marked across the country on that date.
“Accordingly, Wednesday 27th May 2026 will be a public holiday nationwide,” the notice stated.
The announcement, signed and dated Tuesday, 26th May 2026, carries the official seal of the Office of the President. It urges citizens to use the day to reflect on the spiritual significance of Eid-ul-Adha, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.
This public holiday provides an opportunity for Muslim families and communities throughout Sierra Leone to come together for prayers, acts of charity, and festive celebrations while remembering the values of faith, sacrifice, and compassion central to the festival.
All government offices, schools, and many private institutions are expected to remain closed on Wednesday as citizens observe the holy day.
Eid Mubarak to all Muslims in Sierra Leone and beyond.
