Freetown, Sierra Leone – February 16, 2026 – The Parliament of Sierra Leone has called on institutions, organizations, and individuals to submit position papers on the proposed Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Act, 2025. This step aims to boost participation and improve talks on the changes.
The call came from Parliament’s Legislative Services Department on February 16, stressing diverse views for better review. The bill, after its first reading, covers key areas like elections and appointments. Officials see it as vital for democracy, needing wide input for agreement.
Parliament thanked early submitters for their help. The Civil Society Consortium for Transparency, Accountability and Economic Progress Sierra Leone (CS-CTAEP-SL) submitted on February 6, pushing for reforms based on rule of law, rights, and justice. They urged focus on national good, not politics, with open processes.
Related issues include the Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ) calling on February 13 to drop the nomination of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner, as it jumps ahead of reforms. ILRAJ noted the bill’s new committee for fair picks to restore trust after 2023 polls.
An opinion on February 15 warned the bill might overload courts with election cases, limiting options. It called for close checks to protect democracy.
This fits Parliament’s push for inclusive law-making. Send papers to the Legislative Services Department soon, with no set deadline. This highlights Sierra Leone’s work on better governance through teamwork.
