Freetown, Sierra Leone – January 29, 2026: Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio left Freetown earlier today, heading to Accra, Ghana, to participate in the High-Level Consultative Conference on Regional Cooperation and Security.
As the current Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority, President Bio announced his departure via a social media post, expressing optimism for fruitful discussions.
In his statement, Bio said, “As Chair of the ECOWAS Authority, I departed Sierra Leone today for Accra, Ghana, to attend the High-Level Consultative Conference on Regional Cooperation and Security. I look forward to a productive conference.”
The two-day event, hosted by Ghana from January 29 to 30, aims to renew coordinated regional strategies and bolster collaboration amid escalating security challenges in West Africa.
Recent reports highlight a staggering 1,266% surge in terror attacks, underscoring the urgency for united action.
Ghana has pledged $50 million to support ECOWAS anti-terrorism efforts, signaling strong commitment to regional stability.
Bio assumed the ECOWAS chairmanship in June 2025, marking a historic moment for Sierra Leone and emphasizing the nation’s growing role in West African diplomacy.
The conference comes at a critical time, following recent developments like the lifting of sanctions on Guinea after its presidential election.
Attendees are expected to focus on strengthening partnerships to combat terrorism, enhance economic ties, and promote peace across the region. President Bio’s participation highlights Sierra Leone’s dedication to these goals.
