Freetown, Sierra Leone — In a significant display of bilateral cooperation, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone officially donated surveillance equipment to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to support the country’s “Safe City” Project.
The donation, which included 45 CCTV cameras, three Huawei monitors, and three Lenovo laptops—all manufactured in China—was handed over during a ceremony attended by senior officials and law enforcement representatives.
Speaking at the event, the Chinese Embassy representative Hon. Zhang Diabin expressed pride in supporting Sierra Leone’s efforts to enhance public safety.
“These items will assist the SLP in implementing its ‘Safe City’ Project by equipping CCTV systems across the country.
The diplomat reaffirmed China’s dedication to mutual development and security, stating, “These items symbolize our shared commitment to peace, security, and the well-being of every citizen in Sierra Leone. We believe they will empower the SLP to prevent and combat crime more effectively, protect communities, and build public trust—fundamentals for national progress.”
He further assured that China’s support remains action-oriented, reliable, and people-centered, underscoring ongoing commitments to Sierra Leone’s development.
In his remarks, Inspector General of Police Mr William Fayia Sellu extended heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Sierra Leone Police to the Chinese government and the Chinese Embassy.
“China and Sierra Leone have been friends even during our civil war, when China stood by us. It was on that foundation of friendship that our cooperation expanded,” he said.
He noted that the “Safe City” project, conceived in 2014, gained renewed momentum under President Julius Maada Bio, who recognized its strategic importance for crime fighting.
IG Sellu highlighted that over thirty-six surveillance cameras have already been installed in Freetown, including at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital at Cottage, following a rise in child theft incidents.
He also acknowledged China’s support to Sierra Leone’s police media department with modern equipment and praised the progress made with the “Smart City” initiative, which has extended to Bo City South and now aims to include Kenema, Makeni and Port Loko.
Expressing appreciation for the donation, IG Sellu emphasized that the 45 CCTV cameras, three laptops, and three 65-inch plasma screens significantly bolster the police’s capacity to cover all six police regions nationwide.
He also commended the Chinese Embassy for their consistent support whenever assistance is requested and highlighted the training opportunities provided to Sierra Leonean police officers through Chinese-sponsored advanced courses.
He concluded by expressing his joy and optimism, stating, “Today, I am proud to receive this substantial intervention from China, which will help strengthen our efforts to ensure the safety of our people. With these donations, we anticipate a reduction in crime rates in the upcoming quarters.”
The event ended with the official signing and handover of the donated items, marking a milestone in Sierra Leone-China bilateral relations.
