The Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, on Saturday, November 16, 2024, expressed pride in the participation of Sierra Leonean artists at the 15th edition of the Dak’Art Biennale.
Speaking at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, he commended the artists for showcasing their talents and promoting the country on an international stage.
The Vice President, who arrived in Senegal for bilateral meetings with government officials, attended the prestigious art exhibition that features Sierra Leonean artists for the first time in the Biennale’s history.
The group exhibition explores themes such as the ancestry of freed enslaved people, feminism in Africa, tribal unity, post-conflict transitional justice, and African landscapes.
After touring the Sierra Leonean art on display at the embassy, Dr. Jalloh expressed his delight, stating:
“I am happy that the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Nabeela Tunis, will be coming to Dakar in the coming days to explore ways to organize and promote our artistic talents. Sierra Leone has many talented individuals, from carvers to painters, in villages and towns. We need to create platforms where they can showcase their skills at national events in the future.”
Accompanied by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Senegal, H.E. Ibrahim Turay, the Vice President also visited exhibitions at Dakar’s Old Courthouse and the National Art Gallery at the Ministry of Culture.
He viewed the work of Sierra Leonean artist Masoud Olufani, who is among 57 international artists featured in this year’s Biennale.
This marks the first-ever group exhibition of Sierra Leonean artists at the Dak’Art Biennale and the first time the Sierra Leone Embassy in Dakar has opened its doors to welcome Biennale visitors, signaling a new chapter for the nation’s cultural diplomacy.
