Freetown, Sierra Leone – The United States Embassy in Freetown has confirmed that all available appointments under the Diversity Visa (DV) Program for Fiscal Year 2025 have been finalized.
The Embassy disclosed that scheduling has now closed for both Sierra Leonean applicants and third-country nationals who processed their cases through Freetown.
In its announcement, the Embassy encouraged individuals who did not receive an appointment notice to reapply in future DV lotteries. However, it reiterated that Sierra Leonean citizens remain barred from participating in the program under a Presidential Proclamation. This restriction applies regardless of where citizens apply, live, or attend interviews.
About the Diversity Visa Program
The U.S. Diversity Visa Program, commonly referred to as the “DV Lottery,” was established under the Immigration Act of 1990. It is designed to promote immigration from countries with historically low levels of migration to the United States. Each year, the program makes up to 55,000 immigrant visas available globally through a random selection process.
Successful applicants gain the opportunity to become lawful permanent residents of the United States, often referred to as “Green Card holders.” The program is highly competitive, with millions of applications submitted worldwide each year.
However, countries may be deemed ineligible based on certain U.S. government policies or proclamations.
Currently, Sierra Leone falls within that category, making its citizens ineligible to receive Diversity Visas despite widespread local interest in the lottery.
Looking Ahead
While the FY2025 application window has officially closed in Sierra Leone, the Embassy urged prospective applicants to remain informed about future announcements and opportunities.
