The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has announced a ban on all internal flagbearer campaigns, a move aimed at curbing rising speculation about potential aspirants within the ruling party.
Speaking in an interview with Liberty Online TV, SLPP National Publicity Secretary Moses Mambu confirmed that no party member is permitted to officially declare interest in the flagbearer position at this time.
The decision comes amid growing rumors that some senior members, including government officials, are quietly positioning themselves for the role.
Mambu clarified, however, that while the party can restrict official declarations, it has no authority over supporters who openly express allegiance to their preferred candidates.
He further stressed that reconciliation and unity remain top priorities for the SLPP as it sets its sights on the 2028 general elections.
According to him, elders of the party recently initiated dialogue to address disagreements that surfaced after the party’s last convention, including tensions involving the First Lady and the outgoing chairman.
“The reconciliation process is not just about resolving disputes but about building a stronger foundation for the party’s future,” Mambu noted, adding that the SLPP now boasts an estimated support base of 4.1 million members at home and abroad.
Highlighting the party’s achievements under President Julius Maada Bio, particularly in education and the “Big Five Game Changers,” Mambu insisted that the SLPP remains focused, disciplined, and far stronger than its political rivals.
He concluded that the party’s ban on flagbearer campaigns and its reconciliation drive are designed to foster stability, unity, and readiness as the SLPP prepares for another crucial electoral contest in 2028.
