Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a rare show of bipartisan unity, Members of Parliament from both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) have extended their congratulations to President Julius Maada Bio following his election as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.
The announcement was made after what President Bio described as a “very positive and productive meeting” with parliamentary leaders from both sides of the political aisle.
“They kindly expressed their congratulations on my election,” President Bio stated. “I believe it’s essential to emphasise that the progress we make is for the benefit of our beloved country, Sierra Leone, rather than any specific party.”
President Bio also noted that the gesture from the SLPP and APC lawmakers reflected a shared commitment to national development over partisan interests.
“I’m truly happy that we can all recognise the positive impact of our collective achievements. Together, as Sierra Leoneans, I am confident that we will continue to work closely to implement innovative and forward-thinking development initiatives for the betterment of our nation,” he added.
President Bio’s appointment as ECOWAS Chair comes at a critical time for the regional bloc, which is grappling with a wave of military takeovers, threats of fragmentation, and pressing socio-economic challenges. His new role positions Sierra Leone at the forefront of regional diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts.
