Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have successfully resolved concerns surrounding journalist Thomas Dixon and Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, following a high-level meeting held today at Police Headquarters on George Street, Freetown.
The meeting was attended by SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, former SLAJ President Umaru Fofana, senior journalist and lecturer Dr. Isaac Massaquoi, and Thomas Dixon himself. The discussion centered on events from the past three days involving the journalist and the Inspector General.
Speaking after the meeting, SLAJ President Nasralla stated, “We reviewed the issues and reached an amicable resolution. Our goal is to ensure journalists can work without fear while maintaining a constructive relationship with the security forces.”
Inspector General Sellu reassured the SLAJ delegation that there was never any threat to Dixon’s safety.
“Thomas Dixon and his family are safe. We are committed to ensuring that all citizens, including journalists, feel secure,” the IG said. Dixon and his family had gone into hiding due to safety concerns but have since returned home.
In a gesture of reconciliation, Dixon agreed to voluntarily delete a Facebook post in which he described the IG as “arrogant.” Commenting on the resolution, Dixon remarked, “I am satisfied with the outcome of today’s meeting and appreciate the assurances given by the police leadership.”
SLAJ emphasized its dedication to fostering collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police and other national security institutions.
“We will continue to engage constructively to promote mutual respect and understanding between the media and the security forces,” said Nasralla.
The resolution highlights the importance of dialogue in addressing tensions between the press and state institutions in Sierra Leone.
