In an exhilarating match at the Stade du 26 Mars, Sierra Leone’s Leone Stars clawed back from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Burkina Faso in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Monday.
Burkina Faso took control early on, with Dango Ouattara capitalizing on a defensive error to score in the 41st minute.
Just before halftime, Lassina Traore doubled their lead from the penalty spot after Abu Dumbuya committed a foul in the box.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Sierra Leone side. Augustus Kargbo’s 58th-minute goal from a corner kick sparked their comeback.
The Leone Stars continued to press for an equalizer, which finally came in the 87th minute when Amadou Bakayoko unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area, leaving Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper helpless.
The draw leaves both teams in the race for World Cup qualification. Burkina Faso sits in third place with five points, closely followed by Sierra Leone, also with five points, after four matches. Egypt leads the group with ten points, while Guinea-Bissau is in second with six points following their 1-1 draw earlier today.
