In response to the devastating fuel tanker explosion in Liberia last month, the Government of Sierra Leone has taken swift action.
The Ministry of Health and Sanitisation officially announced yesterday that President Bio, alongside Deputy Health Minister Charles Senessie and Health spokesperson Austin Demby, has dispatched a team of highly skilled medical professionals to aid in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
“The Government of Sierra Leone ?? @PresidentBio, through #MoH @DembyAustin, the Deputy Health Minister1 @CharlesSenessie, today dispatched a team of top medical personnel to respond to the recent fuel tanker explosion in @Liberia ?? that claimed lives & left others with injuries,” the Ministry stated on X formally Twitter.
The explosion, which occurred on December 27, 2023, in lower Bong County, claimed the lives of over 40 individuals. The horrifying incident unfolded when a gas truck overturned approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in the Mulbah Hill Community in Totota.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker, involved in an afternoon accident, veered off the road and toppled on its side, leading to a leak. Tragically, individuals who rushed to the scene to siphon the fuel became victims when the tanker exploded.
FrontPageAfrica learned that most of the victims were motorbike riders collecting the spilled fuel. Shockingly, some individuals were burnt beyond recognition.
The casualties included 40 confirmed deaths, with at least 83 others sustaining injuries. Those injured are currently receiving treatment at various medical facilities, including Phebe Hospital, the 14 Military Hospital, John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, and ELWA Hospital, according to statements from Dr. Kateh.
This is the second time in recnet time Sierra Leone hae extended a helping hand to its close neighbours in their difficult time. Last month, the government also dispatched medical team to Guinea in the aftermath of a devastating fire accident in its capital, Conakry.
