Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is set to arrive in Freetown today, Monday, June 2, 2025, for a two-day official working visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and bilateral ties between Senegal and Sierra Leone.
This visit follows recent high-level engagements between the two nations. In April 2024, Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh held discussions with Prime Minister Sonko, focusing on enhancing cooperation in sectors such as trade, air transport, cultural exchange, and technical expertise. Both leaders emphasized the importance of operationalizing the Sierra Leone–Senegal Joint Commission to facilitate these collaborative efforts.
Additionally, in June 2024, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye visited Freetown, where he and President Julius Maada Bio reaffirmed their commitment to regional peace and integration. They discussed the need for closer cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, particularly in addressing security challenges in the Sahel region.
Prime Minister Sonko’s visit is expected to build upon these discussions, focusing on concrete actions to bolster economic and development ties between the two countries. The agenda may include talks on trade, infrastructure development, and collaborative initiatives in energy and mineral resource management.
This diplomatic engagement underscores the shared commitment of Senegal and Sierra Leone to fostering mutual growth and regional stability.
