Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has this evening departed for Accra to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, scheduled for January 7, 2025.
This event underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Sierra Leone and Ghana, highlighting their shared commitment to democratic governance and regional collaboration.
In December 2024, Ghana conducted its presidential and parliamentary elections, marking the nation’s ninth general election since the restoration of multiparty democracy in 1992. The presidential race featured prominent candidates, including former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mahama secured a decisive victory with 56.55% of the vote, signaling a shift in Ghana’s political landscape. The NDC also achieved a majority in parliament, reflecting the electorate’s desire for change amid economic challenges.
Sierra Leone and Ghana share a robust bilateral relationship, characterized by cooperation in trade, security, and cultural exchange. Both nations have engaged in law enforcement exchange programs to enhance regional security and maintain law and order through effective policing. Additionally, trade between the two countries has seen consistent growth, with Ghana exporting goods worth $60.1 million to Sierra Leone in 2019, marking an annualized increase of 6.03% since 2014.
The presence of diplomatic missions, such as the Ghana High Commission in Freetown and the Sierra Leone High Commission in Accra, further cements the diplomatic ties, facilitating collaboration in various sectors.
President Bio’s attendance at President-elect Mahama’s inauguration signifies Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Ghana. Both leaders are expected to collaborate on initiatives promoting peace, prosperity, and unity within the West African region, addressing common challenges, and leveraging opportunities for mutual development.
