Freetown, Sierra Leone – Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio took to social media to address the recent severe weather conditions that have led to widespread flooding in various parts of the country.
“The continuous downpour of rain over the last few days has caused localized flooding, strong currents through open drainstorms and underneath bridges, and roads,” President Bio stated.
Expressing his sympathy for those affected, he added, “My heart goes out to persons who have suffered losses due to the flooding. I urge everyone to take measures to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.”
In response to the emergency, President Bio announced that he has mobilized national resources to assist in the crisis. “I have instructed the National Disaster Management Agency and other first responders and emergency services to be on standby and to render all the assistance they can to citizens,” he said.
Highlighting the broader implications of the severe weather, President Bio emphasized the need for long-term environmental strategies.
“Such disastrous rainfall patterns remind us, as Sierra Leoneans, that we must intensify concrete climate adaptation and mitigation strategies in our country,” he concluded.
