Freetown, 22 October 2025 — The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has dismissed as false and misleading social media claims suggesting that a container filled with kush went missing at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the SLP described the reports as “unpatriotic” and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the country’s image.
The police clarified that the container in question — numbered TCNU 1723946 and bearing the inscription “Triton International”* — was intercepted on 13th May 2025 by the Combined Maritime Control Unit (CMCU) of the SEACOP Project. The inspection uncovered 17 bags of kush (50kg each) and 91 bottles of precursor chemicals.
According to the police, the illicit items were properly recorded by the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) and securely stored under the supervision of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority. Following due process, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) obtained a Destruction Order from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The police confirmed that the drugs, including those found in the said container, were destroyed on 31st July 2025 at the TOCU headquarters in Hastings in the presence of journalists and relevant stakeholders.
The SLP urged the public to verify information with the appropriate authorities before sharing it online and called on anyone with credible evidence of wrongdoing to come forward.
The statement reaffirmed the police’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking and other criminal activities across Sierra Leone.
