The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has officially concluded the search and rescue operations following the collapse of a seven-storey building on September 16th, 2024, located at 57 Bai Bureh Road, Shell New Road.
The building collapsed between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., prompting an immediate response from authorities.
The NDMA, in collaboration with various government agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners, worked around the clock to expedite rescue efforts.
A total of 24 people were recovered from the debris. Tragically, 16 individuals, including children and adults, lost their lives. However, eight survivors were rescued, among them children under five, teenagers, and adults. Five of the survivors, who were treated at Rokupa Hospital, have been discharged, while three others remain under care at Choithram Hospital.
Key contributors to the rescue efforts included the Gento Group of Companies, which provided machinery, fuel, and personnel, alongside other private sector partners like Marampa Mines Limited, JP Logistics, and Sierra Rutile Limited, who supplied environmental safety experts and additional machinery.
Government bodies, including the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the Sierra Leone Police, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and other agencies, were instrumental in providing medical care, security, and logistical support. Special acknowledgment was given to the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society for their continuous role in disaster response.
Community leaders, local councillors, and Honourable Princess Kadie Daramy, the Member of Parliament representing the Shell community, were also praised for their commitment and support throughout the operation.
Search efforts continued until September 24th, particularly focusing on the third and fourth floors of the building, which served as storage areas. Excavators were able to access these floors, allowing business owners to recover items, including spare parts and beverages. Additionally, money recovered from the debris, including NLe 19,160, was returned to its rightful owners.
The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces will secure the site for the next two days while heavy machinery is dismantled. The NDMA plans to begin registering and identifying victims to provide them with necessary relief.
In a debriefing session held with all stakeholders, NDMA Director of Relief and Response Sinneh Mansaray thanked all partners for their contributions, ensuring that both victims and property were recovered.
The NDMA reiterated its commitment to working with environmental stakeholders to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
